About the solution
Topher Wurts' son has autism, which leads him to be extra aware of everything around them when they go out of their comfort zone, always scanning the landscape, wherever they are. For example, at a new park, while others are relaxing, he’s eyeing the fence line, looking for gaps or open gates. This is due to the fact that his son, Kirby, tends to run away, as many autistic kids do, due to their lack of general awareness of the danger involved with not being with a parent or guardian.
Like many other parents of kids with autism, Topher and his wife Jana keep copious notes of autism-friendly places in their hometown of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania.
This evolved into a trade of recommendations with friends about restaurants and venues that cater to the needs of autistic children, where dietary restrictions and over-sensitivity to lighting need to be considered. This is the basis behind Autism Village, a Yelp-like app for families like theirs.
Topher and his team conceived the app idea in the fall of 2014, and six months later, the project went live on Kickstarter, where it reached the set goal of $38,500 in just 12 days.
