About the solution
In times of crisis, especially when it comes to healthcare and public health, it is very important to stop the spread of false information.
And that is what a company called NewsGuard is trying to do. At NewsGuard, a team of journalists verifies the reliability of news sources so that people can know if the information about Covid-19 shared by news outlets can be trusted.
Gabby Deutch, part of the NewsGuard team, explains that “When people are reading the news online, they’re scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, Google results… it’s hard to know when a website they see is legitimate and when it’s not,”
At their website, they have shared an extensive list of websites they’ve identified as publishing false information about the Coronavirus. The list contains more than 200 media outlets from countries like the USA, Germany, Italy or France.
The company is also sharing its browser extension for free, which let’s user know, as they're browsing the web, if the websites they are accessing have been identified as reliable or not.
