About the solution
Betty and Jason Vertin have five children and three of them suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. They used a medical stroller for one of the kids and a double stroller for the young ones.
“Double strollers are ideal for the younger two boys but are often too big for doorways and wheels are too small to carry the wait. Also, it is hard to have individual strollers for all three because we don’t have enough adults to push each one and I don’t like to depend on my other children to have to help. We make do, don’t get me wrong… But I dream about a double or triple medical chair that fits through doorways and can detach from each other depending on how many of the boys we have with us at one time”, Betty explained.
After telling this to the physical therapist, the mother was advised to seek help from the charity May We Help (an organisation that develops gadgets to increase the autonomy level of disabled people).
That’s how the family got to know Ray and Austin, who developed a custom stow-able wagon out of furniture grade PVC that was light enough for parents to load in the van but strong enough to carry three kids. The family got the device in 2014.
Here’s the list of the material used: 2 Casters from Harbour Freight, Locking Pins & Nuts, Bolts, Washers from Rural King, Misc PVC Fittings, 2 PVC 1.25" elbows from Lowes, 2 PVC 1.25" tees from Lowes, Spray Paint, 10 PVC .75" Couplings from Lowes.
