About the solution
Alexandra’s grandfather’s walker tipped as he was trying to use it. A nurse rushed over to show him the correct way to use, and she said that many patients are not able to use the walker properly and, because of that, they have near falls, and there was no solution for this.
So Alexandra created Get Up ‘N’ Go, a non-tip attachment that is added to a standard walker, that allows the user to rely on the walker to sit/stand. The inventor used aluminum tubing to develop a stabilizer that slides into a standard walker frame.
“My dream is to be an inventor and share my ideas with the world”, Alexandra explained.
The student already has a provisional patent for her product, and is planning to file for a utility patent.
“Entering the market is a difficult task and takes lots of time and persistence. I hope that it will be available to all walker users as soon as possible”, Alexandra observed.
The project gained her recognition at the 2016 Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair, where she won first place in the Senior Engineering and Robotics Division and was awarded a merit scholarship from the Pittsburgh Foundation. Alexandra was also a 2016 Intel ISEF award finalist.
