Community mask designed for men with beards

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of masks was becoming widespread, with the World Health Organization and most national health authorities recommending citizens to wear facial coverings to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

However, standard face masks were proving no to be ideal for everyone. Men with large beards, for esthetic or even religious reasons, found that the regular face masks couldn’t accommodate the beards – they wouldn’t fit under the chin and create the tight seal that ensures protection.

To overcome this problem, the creator behind the FourieFamCam Youtube channel and the DadIdeal blog developed a reusable face masks designed to accommodate beards and keep bearded men protected. The mask is made of two layers of 100% cotton fabric and has a pocket to insert filters for added protection. The bottom portion of the masks, that goes over the beard, has an elastic to ensure a tight fit.

The creator shared a complete sewing tutorial on Youtube and the sewing patterns are available for download online, so anyone can replicate the masks. There are three types of patterns available, for small, medium and large size beards.
