Family of doctors and entrepreneurs develops disinfection unit for healthcare workers

About the solution

The Tripon family is one of doctors, dentists and entreperneurs. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they were worried about the safety of their loved-ones, especially due to the lack of protective equipment that was being felt in healthcare facilites all over the world

“Even before the lockdown was announced … we were very concerned about protecting our loved ones from this deadly virus since most of them will be … front-liners” explained Mike Tripon.

Another family member, Dr. Edhel Tripon, explained that doctors in the frontline had to undergo a process called doffing – a 31-step sequence required to safely remove the protective equipment worn during the shifts. This process is essential and, if not preformed correctly and under the proper condition, could cause the workers to be exposed to the virus and potential expose others. However, they also lerned that, as Mike explained “These areas are not adequately equipped and sometimes there is even lack of safety officers”

Mike, along with his wife Jo-an and friend Angel Aquine, are the owners of FAVORI, a company that produces scents and wellness products. So, they decided to make use of the nano-technology machines they had available at their factory and use them to build Mobile Disinfection Units (MDUs). Mike also enlisted the help of his sisters, with expertise in computer science and graphic design, to help put the units together.

The units are compact walk-through cabins that deliver nano particles of disinfectant solution that coat the healthcare worker and inactivate the virus particle that could be present in their PPE. The system use creates a dry mist that provides an even coat without wetting the person.

“When a health worker in full PPE steps in, the misting is activated … [it] sprays for 20 seconds and stops when the person exits. It automatically disinfects the unit before the next person enters. It is an alcohol bath chamber”, Mike said about the unit.

The family is manufacturing and donating units to local hospitals and have set up a crowdfunding campaign to increase their manufacturing ability.
