About the solution
The Living Heart Project consists of building a realistic virtual version of the human heart. It works by using computational modeling and a virtual-holographic platform, and can be a glimpse into the future of medicine, whereby cardiovascular experts can interact with a “high-fidelity multiphysics model” of the human heart, generated by MRIs and CT scans.
Steve Levine, PhD, is Dassault Systemes Chief Strategy Office, was told by the doctors that his daughter’s heart would last until she was about thirty years old.
When the doctors started discussing treatment options such as transplants, they came to the conclusion that data limitation was the problem (because Jesse’s condition was very rare).
“They said they would need a thousand cases like her to get the data they needed. So I thought, well what if I could just get a thousand of her?”, Steve recalled.
To do so would require designing and developing a realistic simulation model of the human heart. So Steve brought together a team of over 100 researchers, engineers, cardiologists, and regulators from 30 organizations to do something that had never been done in the medical arena before: create an interactive, 3D model of the human heart, enabling doctors to explore (and test) treatment options, educate patients, and study new medical devices— all under real-world conditions.
The Living Heart runs on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform which harmonizes 3D design, analysis, simulation and intelligence software in a collaborative environment.
The project is commercially available and aims to arm doctors, researchers, medical device makers and regulatory agencies with the powerful digital simulation tools.
