About the solution
Bulsai is a device that addresses a critical challenge faced by millions of diabetics: identifying healthy tissue for insulin injections to improve absorption and prevent complications like lipohypertrophy (LH). LH occurs when repeated injections in the same area lead to scar tissue, cysts, and fatty deposits, which block insulin absorption and cause blood sugar fluctuations. Using proprietary scanning technology, Bulsai helps users locate optimal injection sites.
Handheld and portable, Bulsai is designed for simplicity. A red/green light system guides users to the best injection locations.
According to the innovator, “We are no longer using ultrasound and have moved to a proprietary scanning technology that is in process.”
In the U.S. alone, Bulsai addresses the needs of 8.3 million insulin-dependent diabetics, where poor injection site selection can result in reduced insulin efficacy, leading to hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, or overdoses. The device has the potential for significant impact: each year, over 16 million emergency room visits are related to diabetes, many due to dosing errors. Approximately 70% of insulin-dependent diabetics inject into unhealthy tissue, diminishing insulin effectiveness and causing glucose variability.
By encouraging proper injection practices, Bulsai reduces hospitalizations, improves daily health outcomes, and provides long-term benefits.
A patent-pending innovation, Bulsai demonstrated the value of scanning technology in diabetes care through a two-month feasibility study. It is the only device of its kind. One year ago, Bulsai partnered with Startup Health to accelerate market entry; however, the device has not yet been launched. The team is currently working on creating a prototype and securing additional funding for regulatory approvals, market research, and manufacturing.
While particularly advantageous for older patients with advanced scarring or LH, Bulsai also helps younger patients prevent injection-related complications early on. With its unique and user-friendly design, Bulsai integrates seamlessly into existing diabetes management routines and has the potential to revolutionize insulin injection practices.
