About the solution
Would you buy something you can’t see?
This is the question that motivated 2 brothers, Bradford Manning, 35, and his 30-year-old brother Bryan, to start tackling a major problem in the blind community. The two brothers have a rare degenerative eye disorder Stargardt disease, which is an inherited form of macular degeneration that causes central vision loss over time, and this means that not so far down the line, they will lose their ability to perform basic day-to-day activities such as going shopping on their own.
One day, they were separated while shopping at Bloomingdale’s, and when they reconnected, they found that they had purchased the same soft shirt. They recalled that the feeling of softness from the shirt was so comfortable that it drew them to buy it.
The next step was getting some advice from friends in the fashion industry and setting up the company, which they called the Two Blind Brothers. This casual line of super soft Henleys, hoodies, polos and T-shirts for men and women (and some for the kiddos too) are made of sustainable bamboo mixed with cotton and spandex, to which they have incorporated Braille indicating the color of each garment into the designs. This way, people who are visually impaired, can know what they are buying.
The goods were originally manufactured in Texas, mostly by visually impaired people. But as they’ve grown, most of the operation moved to Los Angeles.
