About the solution
An independent initiative, with representatives from Singapore have created a catalogue of tips and tricks for a dementia-friendly home. There are millions of people in the world suffering from dementia but their homes and family members are often unprepared to cope with the challenges brought by this condition. However, the authors of the catalogue believe that “design can play an outsized role in shaping environments that empower people with dementia as well as their caregivers”.
According to the website “HACK CARE is a catalogue of more than 240 pages of ideas to make your home a friendlier environment for you and your loved ones with dementia. It assembles practical hacks, surprising ideas, and simple tips and tricks to simplify your life as you cope with the daily challenges of caregiving, while transforming them into meaningful and enriching moments.”
The catalogue’s design and many of the ideas are based on IKEA catalogues and products. According to the authors “while this is an independent initiative, we chose IKEA products for their accessibility and ease of use” but the main goal is to share ideas that can be adapted according to every household.
“We hope the ideas in the pages that follow can inspire caregivers to also come up with their own hacks uniquely suited to the tastes and preferences of their loved ones”.
The catalogue was released during the Covid-19 pandemic, an worldwide emergency that meant that many more people had to be confined to their homes and that took a big tool on families caring for loved-ones with dementia. So, the authors “hope that the pratical ideas in this book can hep make life at home more comfortable, even enjoyable, during this difficult time”.
