Engineers design Lilypad - a weighing device for wheelchair users

Shared by lilypadscales on 2016-01-13 19:44

About the solution

The Lilypad Scale for manual wheelchairs allows you to weigh yourself easily at home without getting out of your wheelchair. It's composed of 4 weighing pads, one under each of the wheels of your wheelchair, which attach to a flexible mat. The scale weighs just 7 lbs and folds up for storage, so it's easy to use even in a small apartment. It has a weight capacity of 400 lbs and accuracy within 0.5 lbs. The scale connects with your smartphone or tablet so you can read the weight easily when weighing yourself. You can learn more or order your own Lilypad Scale at www.lilypadscales.com!

About the author

The Lilypad Scale idea came out of a design class at Olin College of Engineering, where engineers Amos Meeks and Molly Farison interviewed several wheelchair users to find out what they needed that the market was not offering. They learned that wheelchair scales were few and far between and set out to create a wheelchair scale that would be easy to use for individuals in their own homes.
