About the solution
This misdiagnosis, which led to Isabel nearly losing her young life, spawned a 14-year project to help thousands of other patients, at risk of being wrongly diagnosed.
Isabel nearly died as the infection invaded her tiny body. Thanks to quick action taken by doctors at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, her life was saved.
Rather than seeking financial recompense for what happened, as soon as the hospital apologized, her parents were overwhelmed by a sense of wanting to help.
Over the next 14 years they gave up their jobs, dedicating their lives to developing a pioneering new online symptom checker, named after their daughter, to help act as a safety net for doctors, giving them a tool to seek a second opinion.
Charlotte the mother, told MailOnline when the symptom checker was up and running they all sat around and input her daughter's symptoms - chicken pox, fever and vomiting.
'When we put the symptoms into the checker it immediately brought up necrotising fasciitis, it is the second option,' she said. 'I wonder if we hadn't had a personal link whether we could've done it'.
The Isabel Symptom Checker is already widely used in the U.S. and more and more hospitals in the UK are beginning to see the benefits.
It is now available to the public via the website patient.co.uk and is being translated into Spanish and Chinese, as countries around the world show an interest.
It works by scouring its database of medical text books, to match symptoms with the possible diagnosis.
