A special teddy bear helps teach Type 1 diabetic children about their illness - Jerry the Bear

About the solution

While Hannah and Aaron did extensive research on Type 1 diabetes, they noticed several common themes. Among these trends included engaging children using a story- or game-based model.

Kids take care of Jerry by feeding him a healthy diet and keeping his blood sugar level in a good range by counting carbs and matching insulin doses. When Jerry’s blood sugar level goes high or low, Jerry speaks his symptoms, encouraging kids to recognize how they feel. This toy also helps children to gain hands-on practice with counting carbs, monitoring Jerry’s blood sugar, and dosing Jerry with insulin. Kids can also follow along Jerry’s journey of training for the All Stars Game through 21 animated storybooks.

About the author

Hannah Chung, from USA, was in the sixth grade and just found out that her grandfather died from Hypoglycaemia. Because of her family’s history of Type 2 diabetes, Hannah had always been aware of the illness and started to learn more about it as she got older. By the time she started college at Northwestern University, Chung had grown passionate about diabetic care. In her sophomore year, when she met Aaron Horowitz — an undergrad who had a similar passion — the two put their heads together and eventually came up with the idea to create Jerry the Bear.
