About the solution
mDoc, started by Nneka Mobisson in Lagos, Nigeria, is a forward-thinking health technology company focused on making healthcare better for people with long-term and chronic illnesses in Africa. The company uses artificial intelligence (AI) along with proven methods to improve the quality of care for conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.
The core of mDoc’s offerings is Kem, an AI-powered chatbot launched in 2013. Initially trained to answer common questions about chronic diseases, Kem has been continuously improved to better understand and respond to how people discuss their health. This makes the information more accurate and relevant to different cultural contexts. Recently, mDoc has expanded Kem’s capabilities to address STI-related questions, providing a safe and unbiased environment for both women and men. Kem offers information on STI awareness, prevention, and treatment, helping individuals make informed health decisions. The chatbot also connects users to expert healthcare and offers the option to speak with a health coach via for more personalized support.
mDoc also focuses on involving the community and improving digital skills. They set up education centers and send community ambassadors to places like markets, hospitals, churches, and mosques. This helps build trust and makes sure more people can use their technology. The initiative also builds capacity in african healthcare systems by training doctors, nurses, and other health workers through online education, which improves their skills and encourages them to support mDoc’s services.
Since it started, mDoc has made a significant impact with over 124k members, 72k lives improved, 14k healthcare workers trained, and 1.7M interactions. The company has expanded its services to 25 African countries and received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help reduce preventable deaths and improve health outcomes.
