About the solution
OxyGEN is an open hardware prototype that has been collaboratively developed by a group of engineers based in Barcelona.
The group got together in March 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, after realizing the severe lack in emergency ventilators for patient in need, with a mission “to create an open hardware advanced mechanized AMBU that is, low cost , low tech, for emergency situations and make a contribution in saving lives” Many groups were working to develop open source ventilators at the time but the OxyGEN project had a very specific objective to build something with simple design and components so that it could easily be replicated and assembled.
The project is ongoing and the prototypes are continually evolving. The team is currently working alongside several hospitals in Barcelona to test the prototype in a hospital setting and keep improving it in order to obtain a final device that is efficient and safe to be used in patients.
They are developing two different version of the device:
• OxyGEN-M or version “M”: easy to build for Makers, Fablabs or prototype workshops, buildable in wood or acrylic. This version can be built in a few hours, without prior training or specialized tools.
• OxyGEN-IP or version “IP” for mass production in metal, for industrial scale. It has already been shared with various manufacturers to start production tests.
The project plans to the device are open to the entire community for free worldwide. But the makers advise everyone that it’s a device designed to avoid life and death situations in emergency triages, not to replace other superior, professional and much safer devices. It should only be built for emergency situations, and should always be operated by qualified personnel and under medical supervision.
The OxyGEN-IP version has passed in vivo and in vitro clinical tests and has received approval by the AEMPS (Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products) to be used in clinical investigation in Hospital Clinic and Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol.
