Mobile platform developed by informal caregiver aims to end family caregiver burnout

About the solution

Taking care of a loved one can be exhausting. It’s not the actual demands of caregiving that cause burnout, but rather the accompanying mental anguish. And if not handled properly, that anguish can quickly snowball and lead to a variety of negative outcomes.
When Jason was helping his fiancée’s caring for her grandfather, he realised how hard it was to find trustworthy home care. This struggle was his motivation to develop CarePRN.
In 2015, he took his concept to a hackathon at TechTown Detroit and there, he developed his concept and his team.
CarePRN is a simple-to-use platform to allow trusted caregivers to connect and work with families in need of help at the moment. CarePRN is an efficient, affordable, and easy way to find quality, on-demand home care for your loved one.
“Caring for a loved one can be stressful. No one can do it all, but it is often difficult to find qualified professionals to assist,” Jason said. “CarePRN makes the process simple. Helping families find home care on-demand will reduce family caregiver burnout, allowing families to care for their loved ones at home longer. When families can care for their loved ones at home longer, their loved ones are happier and have better health outcomes, and families save money.”
The startup has launched a website—CarePRN.com—and mobile smartphone app that enables families to find local, licensed, and background-checked home care providers on demand in Southeast Michigan. There are no long-term contracts and no minimum number of care hours required. Families simply download the CarePRN app or log on to the website, find a care provider and relax. The CarePRN app and website are intuitive and easy to use. Families can tailor the type of non-medical care they need for each visit. During a care visit, families can monitor, communicate with and securely pay the care providers all through their smartphones or computers. Features also include: in-app notifications, geo-locations, clock-in/clock-out times, a ratings system, aftercare visit summaries and billing statements.
The app also benefits those providing the in-home health care. Nurses choose their own rates, hours, and services provided. They then give 30 percent of their hourly earnings to CarePRN.
Currently, CarePRN has nearly 50 active home care providers in its system. The company wants another 100 more.

Jason Wolfe-Greer, from Detroit, USA, is a registered nurse and the CEO of CarePRN. When he was helping to care for his fiancée’s grandfather at home, he understood the struggle of finding trustworthy home care. The desire to be able to get a break from the care demands of caring for a loved one at home and knowing they would be in the trustworthy, competent hands of a background-checked, certified caregiver is what drove Jason to start CarePRN.
