This solution comes from applying the engineering method to solve our child’s eczema 15 years ago, and subsequently helping thousands of other people in our community and through a non-commercial website.

Considerable research acknowledges that the 20th century eczema and allergy epidemic is primarily an environmental problem (even though some people are more susceptible because of their genes).

We achieved a “high-effect-size” outcome closely related to environmental exposures and repeatable if exposures were reintroduced. People who think they have inherited eczema can eliminate eczema without treatment, and normalize their allergy situation and dry skin without chronic moisturizing. People with just dry skin, including the elderly, can dramatically improve the quality of their skin without chronic moisturizing. Doctors can engage in repeated handwashing without drying skin (or moisturizing) as is assumed cannot be avoided.

An essential aspect of the solution is limiting exposures in home environments to highly hydrophilic surfactants (detergents) known to disrupt skin barrier function and increase skin permeability. These exposures increase absorption through the skin of chemicals and allergens in the environment, and result in water loss and thinning of skin over time. Even people with no eczema — everyone — experiences unrecognized effects. These chemicals did not exist 100 years ago, yet have become ubiquitous in modern households, including of most people who think they use “natural” products.

I have heard from numerous doctors who have used the information to help themselves or their patients. The solution helps people become problem solvers and is not just about removing hydrophilic surfactants, although that is a major aspect. There are many health, medical problem-solving, and environmental implications to this work and solution, not just related to eczema.
