2011 starb der Onkel von Jack Andraka an Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs.
Diese Art von Krebs ist normalerweise tödlich, da sie aufgrund der Lage der Bauchspeicheldrüse, die sich tief im Bauch befindet, oft in späteren Stadien der Krankheit diagnostiziert wird, so dass Tumore möglicherweise nicht auftauchen oder Patienten Symptome entwickeln, bis sie es getan haben groß gewachsen. Dies veranlasste ihn, seine eigenen Papiertests für dieses Protein zu entwickeln, die funktionieren, da das mit mikroskopisch kleinen Kohleröhrchen beschichtete Filterpapier Antikörper enthält, die das Mesothelin anziehen. Dies zwingt die Röhrchen dazu, sich auseinander zu spreizen, und je mehr Protein sich ansammelt, desto geringer wird der Widerstand des Kohlenstoffs gegen den Stromfluss, was es zu einer sehr einfachen Methode macht, das Vorhandensein von Mesothelin zu messen.
Es war nicht einfach für Jack, erwachsene Forscher davon zu überzeugen, dass seine Idee einen Versuch wert war. Er wurde von 200 Wissenschaftlern bei seiner Suche nach jemandem abgelehnt, der ihn in einem bestehenden Labor an seinem Projekt arbeiten lässt!
