Deaf man creates software that delivers real-time captions into classrooms

Shared by Marie Esmenio on 2014-10-31 12:58

About the solution

He created Ai-Live (Access and Innovation), the worlds first simple, feasible system for delivering captions to a classroom. Using innovative software and streaming solutions, the system provides real-time text of classroom discussions delivered to a students laptop in less than seven seconds. The service is supported by Ai-Skills, which provides training, accreditation and quality assurance supporting the re-speaking and subject matter skills central to the delivery of effective education access.

To use the system, a regular teacher uses a radio microphone when addressing the classroom. This audio is streamed using the Ai-Live software to a remote location where are-speaker dictates the teachers lesson using voice recognition software. The text is then streamed back to the laptops of deaf or hearing impaired students in the classroom in less than seven seconds. This system overcomes many of the problems that are holding deaf children back from reaching their full potential.
