Citizen provides portable sinks so the homeless can wash their hands during the Covid-19 pandemic

About the solution

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Terence Lester was paying attention to the news and the health and safety measures suggested by health authorities and he started to worry about a vulnerable part of the population: the homeless. "All the news reports are saying wash your hands, but the homeless population often can't."

Having lived through situations of homelessness as a teenager, Terence knows first-hand the challenges faced by those living on the streets. "I was trying to think of how they will survive. How can they get through this when they can't even wash their hands? So, I decided to start there."

Terence started placing portable sinks around the city of Atlanta. The have a built-in soap dispenser and are connected to a water tank, so the homeless have all they need to sanitise their hands.

Terence is the founder of Love Beyond Walls, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing dignity to the homeless. Everyday, volunteers at the organization, clean and refill each portable sink.

Terence’s hope is that “this catches on and spreads across the country. Even more than that, these sinks can spark the conversation of what else we can do to help the homeless facing this pandemic"
