About the solution
Freddie’s solution relies on facial recognition software to scan a visitor’s face and compare the information to a database which then matches the data. This system is to be used at the front door and can help elderly, disabled, and those living with dementia of particular focus because of it the need for a key for entry.
The system works with a motion sensor that triggers a camera placed on the door, taking a photo of the visitor’s face which is then checked against a database of recognised faces. If the technology recognises the face, the visitor will be prompted to scan an ID tag. If both match up, the door opens.
“I developed the system because my Great Aunt Pat who’s 88 lives at home alone and has dementia. Our problem was that she kept on letting in random strangers and would never remember when people had visited”, he explained.
The system can also be used to make other patients and elderly people feel safer when they’re home alone.
Freddie was named Young Engineer of the Year, at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, in 2019.
