Cancer survivor creates special bed for patients

Nikhil was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 17 years old. The young man had a wedge pillow placed at an angle under his back, which helped him sleep better. So Smart Inclining Bed was born.

“Sitting up actually reduces rates of pneumonia and its severity to a great extent. Falls often occur in rooms when people are trying to get up, some when walking, and many happen when no one else is in the room. Many patients fall and have no hospital staff knowing of their condition until days after. And pressure sores can last years, lead to sepsis and are extremely uncomfortable,” he added. He was also inspired to invent this device by other patients and friends.

The device consists of a bed that can be operated using a remote. It lifts the user up and down and there are nurse/doctor overrides for when patients are not safe to move or need to be moved into a CPR position.

“It sends alerts when coordinated with the breath and other sensors that detect someone is likely to fall or has already fallen,” the innovator observed.

It also features voice recognition shields allow patients to call for help or make requests of nurses. The software allows to check on the patient asking them how they feel if they have taken their medication and done their breathing exercises.

Nikhil built the prototype with the help of two engineers and several interns and then launched a crowdfunding campaign to help further develop his product and get it on the market.

He also founded his own company - Get To Sleep Easy - to develop and commercialise his inventor, which costs Get To Sleep Easy $449.99 – $999.99.
