Colorblind man develops app to distinguish colors

Shared by Katie Patient on 2017-07-04 10:18

About the solution

After being diagnosed with color blindness when he was 7 years old, Vincent spent years looking for ways to improve functionality in his daily life. He decided that in order to do so, he needed to create an app, and began taking computer science classes. This gave him the technical skills needed to develop Color Blind Pal.

The app has three different modes: one that tells the user information about the color of an object, one that shifts the color on the screen to a more distinguishable color and a third simulation experience in which anyone can see their surroundings in the way a colorblind person could, which Vincent calls ‘empathy mode’.

While Color Blind Pal doesn’t guarantee that the user will see the color exactly as it is, it enables a color blind person to find out what any color is, and to navigate difficulties such as reading a color-coded map, chart or graph.

Vincent understood the value of his own experiences, which were what inspired him to create the app, saying, “accessibility was really important to me, I figured I could hone in on my own experience as a color blind person to figure out what features I’d need to hopefully help other color blind people.”

The app is free and available for Android, iOS and Mac.
