Elina Berglund, a physicist at CERN, found inspiration for Natural Cycles while contemplating her own family planning journey. Frustrated by the limited options for a non-invasive, non-hormonal contraceptive as she and her husband discussed starting a family, she embarked on a quest for a natural alternative. Her own experience with hormonal birth control heightened her determination to find an alternative, ultimately leading to the creation of Natural Cycles.
Natural Cycles is the world's first and only digital contraceptive method, approved by the FDA and free from hormones and side effects. It operates by analyzing a woman's body temperature to determine her fertile window. The app's algorithm learns each user's cycle pattern, providing daily fertility status updates. Users have to measure their temperature, input the data into the app, and receive personalized fertility predictions. Natural Cycles aims to support women in taking control of their health through scientific research, providing a safe and effective alternative to traditional contraceptives.
Since its inception, Natural Cycles has made significant advances in the field of women's health. Conceptualized in 2012 by physicist Elina Berglund, the app launched in Sweden in 2014. By 2017, it received CE certification in Europe, based on a study involving over 22k women that demonstrated its effectiveness. In 2018, Natural Cycles became the first FDA-approved contraceptive app. Subsequent innovations include the development of a wearable contraceptive device, receiving FDA clearance in 2021.
